The 2010 Carlos Slim Awards in Health
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS


OBJECTIVE AND DESCRIPTION OF AWARDS


The main objective of the Carlos Slim Awards in Health is to recognize both individuals and institutions that are committed to improving the health of Latin American populations and as a result, facilitated the generation of solutions that address the main public health challenges that Latin America is facing. These solutions may be a product of research efforts, innovations in healthcare or through the development of effective implementation strategies and public goods.

The Carlos Slim Award in Health is granted annually in the following two categories:

The Carlos Slim Award for Life Achievement in Research
This award honors individuals dedicated to both health research and to the creation of solutions that address the greatest public health challenges facing Latin America. This award is given to scientists who have been recognized by the international scientific community and having worked in Latin America have provided effective alternatives to reducing existing public health gaps within the region. In addition, this award recognizes the dedication to dissemination of health knowledge and to training in human resources of these individuals that allow the generation of new knowledge and the strengthening of the research capabilities and health systems within Latin America.


The Carlos Slim Award for Outstanding Institution
This award honors non-profit Latin American organizations whose programs, whether academic or in the field, have contributed successfully to the improvement of health of populations within Latin America. These contributions can be in the areas of health care, prevention, research or human resources training. 
Institutions who receive this award stand out for their sensitivity to the most urgent needs of populations in Latin America, their vision and approach to addressing those needs and their overall capacity. Additionally, institutional awardees are highlighted by their history of promoting inter-agency partnerships to ensure continuity of programs and services and the positive impact to the communities they serve. Some of the fundamental elements that are used for judging the institutional nominees in this category include: the strategic vision of the institution, the level of innovativeness of the institution and the potential for program replication throughout various communities in Latin America. 

AWARD AMOUNTS
In addition to receiving the Carlos Slim Awards statuette, an economic incentive of US$100,000 dollars (or its equivalent in local currency) is granted per award category.

 

 
 
   
 

2010 NOMINATION GUIDELINES


The following requirements apply to both categories

  1. Nominees must be native or permanent residents of a country within the Latin America and Caribbean region.

  2. Nominees are considered on the basis of merit and will not be discriminated against because of ethnicity, sex, religion or political affiliation.

  3. Late nominations will not be considered.

  4. Nominations must include details and verification of career background, research and/or projects that have been carried out, as well as, evidence of their impact.

  5. Nominations may only be submitted in either English or Spanish.

  6. Nominations may only be submitted online at www.salud.carso.org . All required documentation is necessary at the time of online submission. Nominee information may not be saved; nominee submissions must be completed in one session.

  8. Nominations will be accepted beginning Tuesday August 18, 2009 through 2:30 PM (Mexico City time) Friday December 11, 2009.

  9. Nominators should be confident that in the event that their nominee is granted the award, the nominee will be eligible to accept the award.
